SUMMARY:Ekphrasis for the Masses - Quinlan Visual Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Writing POETRY in Response to Art at the Q \nSecond Tuesday of each month at the Quinlan\n12:00 pm- 1:00 pm I Open to the Public \nWhat is Ekphrasis?\nThe word ekphrasis comes from the Greek language and is used for a vivid\, often dramatic\, verbal description of a visual work of art. \nEkphrastic poetry may include literal descriptions of a work of art\, the poet’s mood in response to a work of art\, metaphorical associations inspired by a work of art\, or personal memories about a work of art. \nFive ways to write an Ekphrastic poem or story.\n– Describe what you see\n-Describe what’s happening beyond the frame\n– Write from the perspective of the artist\n-Give voice to a major or minor character in the image\n-Explain your response to the art \nThe “Q” continues to be a fountain of inspiration for artists\, writers\, readers and poets! Their walks through each gallery inspired by the art we see there have been rich in so many ways. It is a joy to have patrons of Ekphrasis return\, eager to discover nuances. Please join QVAC for this welcoming and fun poetry session to learn more about ekphrastic poetry and to write poems of your own! All levels of writers and poets are welcome. Feel free to ask a Quinlan staff member for a chair if you wish to write in the presence of the artwork; sit in the Quinlan’s Sculpture Garden for some fresh air; take a photograph of the piece and write at your leisure.

SUMMARY:"How I See Her" Exhibition - Smithgall Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:“How I See Her” explores female friendships\, girlhood\, and the feeling of home through artworks made in a shared space. \nThe Gail Girls is an art collective of three artists: Isabella Martino\, Aida Alarcon\, and Juleah Everglade. This roommate trio moved to Gainesville together in 2023 as alumnae of University of North Georgia\, where they immediately configured their home to be a hub of creativity where artworks and big ideas fill every empty space. Reflecting on their cohesive style and shared themes in their respective portfolios inspired them to dive into creating a show together as a way to highlight their unique collective dynamic as artists\, roommates\, and friends. \nVisitors are invited to experience this special exhibition at the Smithgall Arts Center from June 10 through July 10 on Tuesday – Friday between 10:00 PM – 4:00 PM. \nJoin the Smithgall Arts Center for an artist reception on June 23rd from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

SUMMARY:The Ultimate Doors: A Tribute to The Doors - The Hall at Bourbon Brothers
DESCRIPTION:DOORS @ 6:00 PM | SHOW @ 7:30 PM \nThe Ultimate Doors has long been celebrated as one of the most authentic and powerful Doors tribute bands in the country. Described by fans and critics as “uncannily true to the original” and “the closest you’ll get to seeing The Doors live today\,” the band has built its reputation on delivering a raw\, electrifying\, and immersive experience that captures the spirit of Jim Morrison and The Doors with uncanny accuracy. \nWhat sets The Ultimate Doors apart is their obsessive attention to authenticity. From the period-correct instruments and vintage gear that recreate The Doors’ unmistakable tones\, to the styling\, stage presence\, and energy that mirror the original band\, every detail is crafted to transport audiences back to 1968. The four musicians of The Ultimate Doors combine to create a sound so faithful that fans often remark they feel as though they’re at a real Doors concert. SUMMARY:Squirrel Nut Zippers - The Hall at Bourbon Brothers
DESCRIPTION:DOORS @ 6:00 PM | SHOW @ 7:30 PM \nSquirrel Nut Zippers: Celebrating the Enduring Fire of Hot \nWhen Hot first hit the airwaves in 1996\, it didn’t just ignite excitement — it sparked a cultural bonfire. With its infectious blend of swing\, jazz\, Delta blues\, and Southern storytelling\, Hot rocketed Squirrel Nut Zippers from the underground scene of Chapel Hill\, NC\, to the national stage\, going Platinum and defining a generation’s rediscovery of vintage Americana. \nThe band’s breakout sophomore album captured lightning in a bottle. Recorded at the famed Kingsway Studio in New Orleans (owned by Daneil Lanois)\, the record radiated with authenticity. Featuring a warm\, analog sound\, paired with wry\, vivid storytelling\, the album topped the Billboard 200 charts for an impressive 51 weeks and included such standout tracks as “Put a Lid On It\,” “Blue Angel\,” and its biggest hit to-date “Hell.” \n“Hell\,” which at the time\, was considered an unlikely radio single\, topped the Alternative Airplay charts at #13 and has become a pivotal piece of pop culture as it continues to heat up the radio and TV airwaves\, appearing on alt rock and Americana stations and in such prominent television shows as Wednesday (2025) and Lucifer (2021). \nNow\, 30 years later\, the Zippers are celebrating the ever-lasting magic of Hot with the “In The Afterlife” tour\, where the band will play the record in its entirety. The 30th celebration of Hot is not just a look back — it’s a salute to resilience\, innovation\, and the enduring power of a band that never stopped evolving. \nFormed in 1993 by Jimbo Mathus\, Katharine Whalen\, and a tight-knit group of musical misfits\, Squirrel Nut Zippers defied genre from the start. Their sound — an intoxicating mix of prohibition-era jazz\, big band bravado\, and punk-rock irreverence — invited listeners into a world where vaudeville met voodoo and speakeasy swagger met Southern soul. \nLed by Mathus\, and managed by original drummer Chris Phillips\, the modern-day Zippers continue to honor that legacy while breathing new life into their beloved catalog. As the Squirrel Nut Zippers bring Hot back to the stage\, fans old and new are rediscovering what made the album — and the band — so unforgettable. Music that swings\, sings\, and sizzles with soul.
